Edmunds Co. Conservation District reminds you to begin planning for tree plantings

Trees and shelterbelts play a vital role in the ecosystems and are beneficial to homeowners and landowners.

The Edmunds County Conservation District offers tree planting services to help landowners and operators install shelterbelts and tree rows.

With harsh Midwest winters, shelterbelts can block wind and capture snow. Home and building can become more energy efficient when protected by trees. Livestock also can utilize feed more efficiently and require less calories in extreme weather events due to shelterbelts helping regulate temperatures. Trees also provide shade, reduce erosion, and help conserve soil moisture.

Individuals may be eligible for various cost-sharing opportunities through different partners. If you are interested in establishing a shelterbelt or tree grove, call the district office at (605) 426-6994 to visit about the process.

Some species of trees have limited availability, so planning early can help secure those trees.
