IHS Boys fourth at State B, girls ninth

Ipswich attended the State B high school cross country meet on Saturday in Huron, highlighted by their boys' fourth-place effort in their team standings with just the minimum number of three runners with no pushers. (They scored 55 team points.)

Dylan Wald led the Tigers earning a 20th-place individual medal in 18:12.09. Next were Xavier Kadlec in 21st at 18:12.04 and Turner Thorson in 23rd in 18:50.58.

There were a total of 114 runners in this event individually won by Josiah Schroeder of Canistota in 16:38.25 with Tavin Schroeder of Freeman Academy/Marion finishing second in 17:06.47. The three teams outdistancing Ipswich in the team standings were champion Philip at 20, second-place Northwestern at 38 and Freeman Academy/Marion in third at 53, narrowly edging the Tigers.

Meanwhile the Tiger girls would place ninth in their team standings with 83 team points. There were a total of 113 lady runners. They would include a pair of Top 20 medalists, Madisyn Gellhaus seventh in 20:17.34 and Gracyn Kadlec 20th in 21:18.35. Their other runner that afternoon was Aubree DeRaad placing 84th in 23:54.84.

The top girl that day would turn out to be Emery Larson of Chester Area in 18:15.24, followed by Ella Boekelheide of Northwestern in 19:19.24.

The team championship was won by, who else, Potter County with 24 team points followed by Arlington a distant second with their 60.

The weather really favored running that day for a change, giving runners a much needed break after a sometimes challenging regular-season conditions.

The Tigers had a welcome home and awards ceremony at the school on Sunday and you can be sure that Coach Todd Thorson would have some nice things to say about the Tigers. Turner Thorson, the coach's nephew, finished his career on Saturday as an IHS senior cross country competitor.
