The Nike Cross Regionals took place at Yankton Trail Park in Sioux Falls on Sunday, November 13. The competition, in the Heartland, was a seven-state event, including Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wisconsin.
There were over 4,000 registrants, making this the largest regional competition in Sioux Falls history.
There were five sections in the Boy’s Open Invitational, with a total of 1590 runners. The Ipswich boys, who ran unattached, ran in the fourth section, which hosted 325 runners.
Xavier Kadlec crossed the line first for the local runners in 141st and a time of 18:31.80. In 218th and 219th, respectively, were Dylan Wald and Turner Thorson. Wald ran a 19:49.10 and Thorson a 19:50.00.
Results were combined and when it was all said and done, Kadlec earned 755th, Wald 1126th and Thorson 1129th.
Three sections made up the Girl’s Open Invitational. Ipswich girls ran in the second section that hosted 361 runners.
Madisyn Gellhaus led the charge with a 20:06.10 clocking and 49th place finish. Gracyn Kadlec followed in 97th with a time of 20:58.40. And then Aubrey DeRaad, running on her birthday, finished in 24:56.00 and 295th .
When these results were combined, a total of 983 runners stepped up to the line. Gellhaus was 115th overall. Kadlec came up with 240th and DeRaad 775th .
Tyler Gellhaus ran in the Rising Stars race, a race reserved for athletes in sixth through tenth grade. He placed 240th out of 305 runners in a time of 21:10.60.
The cross-country team had an uncharacteristically warm season. This meet would prove to be different with temps ranging in the mid-twenties most of the day and wind gusts reaching 15 mph. That’s enough to make anyone hang up their running shoes, at least for a little while, but don’t be surprised if you still see these hardworking kids out on the open roads, just doing what they love.
