Hazel Louise Engle, 93, of Sioux Falls, formerly of Ipswich, passed away Monday, January 9, 2023, at Dougherty Hospice House in Sioux Falls.
Funeral Services will be 11 a.m., Thursday, January 12, 2023, at the United Church of Christ, Ipswich, with Pastor Tim Fugman officiating. Visitation will be one hour before the service at the church. A time of fellowship and luncheon will follow the service at the church hall.
Burial will be at the Ipswich City Cemetery at a later date.
Hazel Louise VanSchaack was born on December 22, 1929, in White River to Ray and Blanche (Parlet) VanSchaack. As a child, she lived in Wood, Phillip, and Mobridge, and in 1942 when she was in seventh grade she moved to Ipswich. While in high school, Hazel played drums and basketball, was a cheerleader and attended Girls State. She loved working in the school's superintendent's office as a secretary.
After graduating high school in 1948, Hazel attended Northern State College for one year and earned her teaching certificate. She taught for one year at Harmony Township School with five students and worked at the REA office in Ipswich.
On December 17, 1949, Hazel married Dick Engle in Ipswich. They had five children: Bill, Jan, Donna, Dorla, and Kelly. Hazel worked full-time raising their children and helping run a family farm. In 1982, they moved from the family farm to Aberdeen.
Hazel was a member of PEO Chapter BB in Ipswich and was a member of Eastern Star, serving as Worthy Matron. She was an avid oil and china painter and had a passion for gardening and growing flowers. She moved to All Saint's Independent Living in Sioux Falls in 2013.
Thankful for sharing Hazel's life are her children, Jan (Dave) Eiesland of Sioux Falls, Donna (Duane) O'Neill of Ridgeland, Miss., Dorla (Randy) Kantack of Aberdeen, and Kelly Engle of Mitchell; grandchildren, Melanie Engle of Santa Monica, Calif., Tricia Engle of Falls Church, Va., Jess (Sonja) Eiesland of Sioux Falls, Laura (Patrick) Munson of Sioux Falls, Steven O'Neill of Jackson, Miss., Kevin Kantack of Moore, Okla., and Brian Kantack of Sioux Falls; great-grandchildren, Jadon, Will, David and Micah Munson of Sioux Falls, and William and Garrison Glasford of Falls Church, Va.
Preceding Hazel in death were her parents, Ray and Blanche VanSchaack; husband, Dick Engle; brother, Harold VanSchaack; and son, Bill Engle.
Schriver Funeral Home, 720 6th St., Ipswich, is in charge of arrangements.
