Monarchs top Tigers at home

Warner won a 63-30 Lake Region Conference girls varsity basketball decision over Ipswich last Thursday in the Tiger Den.

The visiting team established a 13-8 first-quarter lead after opening the contest with 11 unanswered points. That's right, Gabby Wald would finally put the home team on the scoreboard with four straight two-point baskets which temporarily drew the Tigers to within three points at 11 to eight.

But the Monarchs would never trail, leading 31-18 at intermission and 46-26 with a quarter to play.

They received 17 points from Kendyl Anderson, 12 points from Kyra Marcuson and 10 points by Kamryn Anderson. And five more Monarchs would score that evening.

Meanwhile Wald would finish with 12 points to lead the Tigers. Marley Guthmiller added six points and Kaylin Onken, five points. Ashlyn Weig, Quincy Olivier and Brianna Geditz would each contribute two points. Anna Nierman capped scoring with her free throw.

Ipswich scored nine baskets (all from within the trey arc) and went 12-18 in free throw attempts. Warner countered with 26 total baskets that included four treys. The Monarchs finished 7-9 at the free throw stripe.

Warner used a 45-23 rebounding advantage led by Ava Nilsson with eight. Guthmiller, Nierman and Olivier would lead Ipswich's balanced rebounding effort with three boards apiece.

Warner had 12 turnovers; IHS, only 10. Ipswich had nine assists and eight steals led by Olivier's five thefts. Warner had 21 assists and eight steals as well.

The girls will host Northwestern on Thursday, Jan. 12. Ipswich girls and boys will play a doubleheader at home on Tuesday, Jan. 17 against North Central.
