Ipswich hosted Herreid/ Selby Area in a girls-boys non-conference varsity basketball twinbill with mixed results on Friday, Jan 27.
The Ipswich girls indeed were defeated 56-27 and the boys won their confrontation 47-36.
Defensive efforts played a role in both outcomes.
The HSA girls would get their initial double-figure lead at 18-8 to end the first quarter. They would then lead 32-13 at intermission and go ahead 44-18 with a quarter to play. A Rylee Kleffman basket inside the trey arc would provide the Tigers' final scoring.
But Ipswich was led by Gabby Wald with a trio of treys for her nine points. Ashlyn Weig was next with six points, followed by Kaylin Onken with four points and Quincy Olivier, Katie Bierman, Brianna Geditz and Kleffman each scored two points.
The visitors obtained 11 different scorers led by Jordyn Rossow with 14 points, while Steph Allbee scored eight points and Pausha Meidinger added seven points. They had a bunch of four-point scorers including Jennica Berens, Mya Ebel, Jada Rossow, Taryn Hettick and Sam Schilling. Next would be Katie Allbee with three points and Alexia Goehring had two points as did Sophie Ritter.
They made 25 accurate floor shots including three treys and were only 3-14 in free throw tries. Ipswich made 11 total baskets of which three were those Wald treys and went 2-5 at the charity stripe.
The taller Wolverines collected 38 rebounds; Ipswich, 22, led by Olivier's three. The Tigers and Wolverines each incurred 22 turnovers, but Ipswich had 11 steals led by Olivier's three thefts and HSA countered with a dozen steals.
Now for the boys! Ipswich would overcome a brief early deficit, but grabbed a 10-6 lead of its own after a quarter. The Tigers really did some damage at both ends of the court late in the second quarter to lead 28-15 at intermission. Trevor Heinz was able to obtain an offensive rebound return to end the half.
However the visitors would hang around after trailing 36-23 with a quarter to play and would close to within nine points until the Tigers restored order late in the contest.
The Tiger boys' balanced attack was led by Tyler Hettich, Ian Beyers, and Chet Peterson with eight points apiece. Carter Geditz, Turner Thorson and Heinz each contributed five points with Heinz obtaining their lone trey. Colby Sylte and Blake Rich each added four points.
The visitors employed Hunter Friend's nine points with Trevor Gill next at eight points followed by Tray Hettick with six points. Brenden Begeman added five points and Gavin Hannan and Mason Vetter added three points apiece followed by Wayde Grage with two points.
The Wolverines were able to connect on 12 of their field goal tries that featured three treys and were 9-19 in free throw shooting. Ipswich countered with 17 accurate floor shots that included that lone trey and the Tigers were a warm 12-15 in free throws.
The Tigers grabbed 32 rebounds led by Peterson with nine boards and three of Ipswich's nine steals were from Beyers. Ipswich added 11 assists, led by Hettich and Beyers with three apiece.
The Tiger girls played Leola/Frederick on Tuesday in Leola. The IHS boys and girls will host Miller in a doubleheader on Thursday, Feb. 2. Friday they will play a DH in Roscoe against North Central, a game postponed from earlier this season. The boys and girls travel to Aberdeen on Feb. 7 to play Aberdeen Christian.
