Battlers come up on top in doubleheader

Ipswich lost a girls/boys non-conference high school varsity basketball twin-bill at Potter County last Thursday. The Tiger girls would face a 44-34 shortfall and the IHS boys trailed 67-59 at the final buzzer.

In the girls' encounter the hosts would jump ahead 10-4 after a quarter and then they would only lead 16-14 at halftime. The Battlers' margin was even slimmer, 26-25, with a quarter to play. But they got the job done defensively down the stretch, limiting the Tigers to nine points.

The Battlers were led in scoring by Ashlee Kaup with 25 points that included four treys, followed by Olivia Mikkelsen with eight points. Peyton Stevens and Emma Schlachter each added five points and Dannika Kaup a free throw.

The Tiger girls countered with 13 points from Katie Bierman, including a trey and Gabby Wald also got into their double-figure scoring column with 10 points that featured two treys. Brianna Geditz was next with five points including a trey, while Ashlyn Weig contributed three points. Anna Nierman scored two points and she was followed by Tristan Geditz with one free throw.

The Battlers made 13 baskets that included four treys and were 14-24 in free throw tries. Ipswich also totaled 13 baskets including their four treys but were only 4-10 in their trips to the free throw stripe.

Ipswich collected 41 rebounds, led by Kaylin Onken with eight of them. But Potter County had 40 retrieves. The Tigers sustained 22 turn-overs and the Battlers, 17. Fourteen of those were Tiger steals, led by Bierman's six. The hosts also obtained 14 steals.

BOYS

Now for the boys! The Tigers had led 15-7 after a quarter and also enjoyed a 23-18 halftime advantage. But the Battlers would erupt for a 38-29 lead with a quarter to play and their margin would only decrease to eight points in the final stanza.

They were led by Ryder Falkenhagen's 38 points and next would be Landon Larson with 15 counters. Skyler Van Well was next with six points. Only three more Battlers would dent their scorebook. But they made 19 baskets that included six treys and were 23-32 in free throws.

Ipswich totaled 23 accurate floor shots that included six treys. The Tigers were 7-14 in free throw attempts. They were led by Trevor Heinz with 16 points including one trey and three assists. And Ian Beyers was next with 13 points featuring three treys.

Tyler Hettich contributed nine points, followed by Carter Geditz with eight points and Colby Sylte had two treys for his six points. Jace Konsor scored three points and Tucker Miller and Blake Rich completed their scoring effort with two points each.

Ipswich had 33 rebounds, led by Geditz with eight. The Battlers grabbed 32 rebounds.

The Tigers had 14 turnovers and the Battlers, 16. And of Ipswich's nine steals, Beyers had three. Meanwhile, Potter County had eight steals to help offset their turnover situation
