Local Conservation District plans workshop

The Edmunds County Conservation District and Ipswich Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) will be hosting a spring workshop on March 22, 2023, at the Edmunds County 4-H Building in Ipswich.

Local producers are encouraged to attend to learn about the benefits of incorporating rye into a corn and soybean cropping system. Utilizing rye or other cover crops is an effective tool to help producers implement soil health practices. Cover crops put a living root in the soil to combat erosion, increase crop diversity and help improve soil aggregate stability.

Jason Miller, NRCS Area Agronomist, and Dustin Christofferson, Manager of the Bowdle Agronomy and Innovation Center, will create a dialogue to help producers understand why rye works best for this system, and how to effectively add rye into the corn-soybean rotation. When to plant, the appropriate seeding rate, managing growth, and spring termination methods are all topics Jason and Dustin will share their knowledge and expertise on. Spring cash crop planting details will also be a portion of the conversation as there are planter settings and timing considerations that can improve crop stand. Planting a cash crop into rye can reduce evaporation and weed pressure, saving a producer time and money.

The event is free and open to the public. Registration will begin at 1:15 p.m., with the event starting with speakers at 1:30 p.m. and will conclude at approximately 5 p.m. Snacks and refreshments will be provided. Reach out to the Ipswich NRCS office at (605) 426-6951 or email [email protected] with questions or concerns about the event.
