Ipswich Library plans Scan Day in April

The Marcus P Beebe Memorial Library is holding a “SCAN DAY” on April 19, 2023 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

“SCAN DAY” is an opportunity for you to bring old photographs, documents, postcards, letters, diaries, service records, etc. to the library and have an electronic copy made. This will help preserve the item in case the original gets lost or eventually disintegrates with age. It also makes it easy for you to share family history by email, Facebook, and share with genealogy websites and groups.

Each person is limited to 10 to 15 items and a 40-minute time slot. Have your items selected ahead of time. If you have a scrapbook, scanning will take longer and you may not be able to get everything scanned in your allotted time. All scanned items are returned and USB drives will be provided to you, which will include the digital copies of your items. Scan size is 8 x 10.

Bring as much information on the item as you can.

• WHO is in the photo-full names.

• WHAT is going on in photo and WHY it was taken.

• WHEN-date photo taken, even if “between 1925-1932” or “late 1940”.

• WHERE was photo taken.

If you have items or records to help document the history and heritage of South Dakota, you may get the information for donating records from the scanning staff. The scanning staff will be coming from the S.D. State Library in Pierre.

Items not scanned are: newspapers, copyrighted materials (unless permission is obtained from copyright holder), and anything that contains private information. If your are not comfortable having items displayed online — do not bring them to Scan Day.

You will need to set up a time slot for scanning your items. Call the library at 605-426-6707 to make your appointment.
