Roger L. Gramm, 73, Hosmer, passed away Thursday, April 13, 2023 at Avera St. Luke's Hospital in Aberdeen with his family by his side. Funeral services was at 2:30 p.m., Tuesday, April 18, 2023 at St. John's Lutheran Church, Hosmer, led by Pastor Janet Sandmeier.
Interment, with military graveside rites by the Adolph Forkel American Legion Post No. 189, Hosmer, follows at Bethany Cemetery, Hosmer.
Roger Lee Gramm, son of Gladys (Klein) and Walter Gramm, was born December 28, 1949 at Ipswich. He was brought up on the Gramm farm four miles north of Hosmer in McPherson County. His formal education consisted of rural school through fourth grade, Hosmer Public School (Class of 1968), and North Dakota State College of Science in Wahpeton, N.D. where he studied Automotive Repair.
Roger served his country in the United States Army, being inducted December 3, 1970. Following his honorable discharge on June 6, 1972, he returned home and worked at Kaul's Repair in Hosmer. Roger married Katherine Malsam September 28, 1974 at Hosmer. He was then employed at A. Herrboldt and Company in Hosmer for nearly 30 years. In 2003 he was employed at the Hosmer Cenex and the next year he began an 11-year employment at the Edmunds County Highway Department. Roger retired in December 2015 and lived the rest of his life in Hosmer.
Roger was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church where he served several times on the Church Council. Roger was always there to volunteer his mechanic skills to the Hosmer Volunteer Fire Department. He loved to be in his garage around his tools. Roger enjoyed and was able to repair and build anything for family, friends and neighbors. He also loved to go driving, listening to old country music, and anything with an engine. He was a kind and humble man and was always there if you needed anything. He will be greatly missed!
Roger is survived by Kathy, his wife of 48 years; one son, Brian (Whitney) Gramm of Aberdeen; one daughter, Rebecca (Perry) Blocker of Bath; one sister, Miranda (Dan) Scherr of Fargo, N.D .; one brother-in-law, Joseph (Sheila) Malsam of Aberdeen; four grandchildren, Tenley and Taven Gramm and Austin (Katie) and Emily Blocker; two great-grandchildren, Westin and Tate; and an aunt, Phyllis Kirschenmann of Hosmer.
He was preceded in death by his father, Walter, on February 1, 2013; his mother, Gladys, on January 5, 1994; one brother, Scott; parents-in-law, Frank and Adeline Malsam; and sister-in-law, Margie Sayler.
Casketbearers were Roger's son, Brian; son-in-law, Perry; grandson, Austin; and Rodney Kirschenmann of Hosmer, Jamie Scherr of Fargo, and Don Martel of Aberdeen.
Musicians were Joyce Heyne and Wes Schaible. The usher was Delbert Gienger.
