It was a memorable day for this year's version of the Lake Region Conference track and field action on Tuesday, May 9 in Ipswich!
"What a day for the Tigers," explained Coach Thorson. "I couldn't be more proud of these seniors and our team." He added: "This is the sixth year in a row we have swept the conference titles and it is the 17th title in a row for our girls. We joined the Lake Region in 2006 and the girls have never lost a team title."
The Tiger boys have also had plenty to brag about over the years, especially this year! (All they did was more than double the second-place team!) And in the past? "The boys have won 14 out of 17 (LRC titles) since joining in 2006," Thorson recalled.
Ipswich indeed claimed the 2023 high school girls' team title with 173 team points, compared to Warner's second-place effort of 112. (The Tigers would sweep the varsity action with 224 boys' team points easily over-powering the runners-up of Frederick's 108.)
Girls first! They featured a lot of team depth. Marley Guthmiller won the 300-Meter hurdles in 50.41 and she was second in the pole vault in 8-03.00, second only to teammate Quincy Olivier at 8-03.00. Ashley Ptacek won the triple jump event in 32-04.50.
The winning event boys featured Trevor Heinz who was first in the 100-meter dash in 11.68 and first in the long jump at 21-07.50. And Carter Geditz was first in 15.97 in the 110-meter hurdles. Tyler Hettich won the high jump measured at 5-10.00. Another field event produced a ton of Tiger placers, the pole vault won by Darrel Yost at 10-09.00. And the shot put event ended up being won by Lucas Rowland at 44-00.50. Their further depth was indicated by three placements, 1-2-3, in the 800-meter run won by Maxwell Kulesa at 2:06.28.
Don't look now but the North Central track and field program is definitely something to watch for in the future.
That's because the NC youthful boys were the Lake Region Conference middle-school team champions and the Thunder middle-school girls were second only to Warner in their LRC team standings last Tuesday on a beautiful day in Ipswich.
