Coleen Harner, 82, Tolstoy, died Saturday, June 17, 2023 at the Bowdle Hospital.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m., Wednesday, June 21 at the Bowdle Seventh-day Adventist Church led by Pastor George Shaver.
Coleen Ann Bieber, daughter of Bertha (Roesch) and Edward Bieber, was born at Faulkton on February 13, 1941.
She was brought up in Tolstoy and attended the Tolstoy Public School. She attended and graduated from Plainview Academy in Redfield, Class of 1959. Coleen furthered her education at Union College in Lincoln, Neb. where she earned a Bachelor's Degree in Nursing. After nursing at St. Luke's Hospital in Aberdeen, she relocated to Kettering, Ohio where she continued her career in nursing.
Coleen married Fred Harner at Tolstoy on June 3, 1965. The couple lived in Berrein Springs, Mich. (while Coleen worked at Niles, Mich.) and later Fred's hometown of Xenia, Ohio. In 1974, the Harners moved to Aberdeen where Coleen returned to work at St. Luke's. In 1977, they moved to Coleen's hometown of Tolstoy. Over time, she was employed at Holy Infant Hospital in Hoven, the Edmunds County Health Department, Bowdle Healthcare Center where she was Director of Nursing. Her final vocation was managing Westwood Assisted Living in Roscoe. Coleen retired in 2004.
She was a member of Bowdle Seventh-day Adventist Church where she was active in the Dorcas Society and organized many meals and Christmas parties. She also belonged to the Bowdle Red Hatters. Coleen enjoyed cooking, sewing, and gardening. Coleen's family especially craves her homemade bread.
Coleen is survived by Fred, her husband of 58 years; one son, Mark Harner of Tolstoy; two daughters, Angie (Jim) Hoffmann of Gillette, Wyo., and Susan (Todd) Dewey of Box Elder; and four grandchildren, Ashlea (Pete) Ohnsorg of Watertown, Minn., Nicole Hoffmann of Salt Lake City, Utah, Tate Dewey of Box Elder, and Landon Hoffmann of Gilette.
She was preceded in death by her father, Edward, on April 2, 1984; her mother, Bertha, on March 1, 1974; and her sister, Patricia Jensen, on June 19, 2020.
Musicians will be Lloyd and Beverly Binder. Interment follows at the Tolstoy Seventh-day Adventist Cemetery.
Honorary bearers will be the caring staff at the Bowdle Nursing Home.
Casketbearers will be grandsons, Landon and Tate; Pete Ohnsorg; sons-in-law, Jim and Todd: and Josh Heinrich of Tolstoy.
