Ipswich entered the win-column for the first time this season in high school volleyball action vs. Waubay/Summit last Thursday in the Tiger Den. And it turned out to be a straight-sets sweep - 26-24, 25-19 and 25-20. But the visitors would hang around all evening to keep things close, particularly in the first set. Yes, Marley Guthmiller delivered that set point with her kill.
Unofficially Guthmiller would end up with 10 kills in her 23-29 hitting effort. Gabby Wald was next at 18-22 with nine kills.
All that was made possible by Ipswich's setting duties. The Tigers were 84-89 as a team with 28 assists. Josie Knutson finished 26-39 with 11 assists and Reaghan Bowers added 35 accurate sets with 12 assists.
Ipswich was also efficient in serving. The Tigers were 67-76 at the line and included six aces. Guthmiller was 17-18 with two aces and Bowers went 13-13 with a pair of aces as well.
Ipswich had 64 digs led by Kathryn Kilber with 16 and Wald with 12. And Ipswich had a block assist by Jayda Gisi and Kaylin Onken.
Last Tuesday in the Tiger Den the Tiger had lost a straight-sets 3-0 match to Groton Area in a battle of the Tigers. But there were some positives to take home in this outcome. Ipswich only trailed Groton 25-22 in set number one and then lost 25-16 and 25-20, respectively.
Wald landed three serving aces and Natalie Crissman, one ace. Guthmiller added seven kills and Wald six kills at the net. They were led in setting assists by Bowers with 14.
Defensively the IHS Tigers came up with 43 digs, paced by Bowers with 10, Guthmiller and Wald each with eight and Kilber with four.
The Tigers played Sully Buttes on the road on Tuesday. They host Sunshine Bible Academy on Thursday. They will play in the Mobridge-Pollock Invitational Tournament on Saturday. The Tigers will travel to Warner on Sept. 12.
