Volkssport Club walk for all ages

Despite the rainy weather, walkers came from across the country for the Prairie Wanderers Volkssport Club event in Ipswich on Friday, Sept. 22.

There were 27 walkers signed in for the Ipswich 5K (3.1 miles). There were two routes around town, starting at the picnic shelter in Charles Collier Memorial Park. Walkers received detailed instructions and a map of each route.

Betty "Sam" Vaughn of Brookings, the club's treasurer, said volks-walks began in Germany. Now it is an international sport. People do it to have fun, excerise and get fit.

The Volkssport walkers have books they use to document their walks. The length and location of each is registered.

The local walks were held in several area counties. The Volkssport participants are trying to walk in each county in South Dakota. Walks were planned in Ipswich, Selby, Leola, Faulkton, Herreid and Gettysburg. The Prairie Wanderers are in charge of organizing the walks in the eastern half of the state.

Vaughn said all ages participate. There were walkers as old as 80 years here in Ipswich.
