Rain dampens Tigers football play Saturday

Saturday's rain-soaked Lake Region Conference high school football game on Saturday in Aberdeen with Ipswich vs. Leola/Frederick provided all the drama that you would come to expect in that league. And fans certainly got their monies worth, watching the 16-12 win by the Titans.

It would all go down to Ipswich receiving one more late possession to try to score and the Titan's defense would deny the Tigers that opportunity.

Each team had scored twice, but Ipswich was unable to get into the end zone both times in its PAT plays, while Leola/Frederick would successfully tack on both two-point PAT conversions.

The Titans had signaled their intentions with an early touchdown march capped by Brayden Sumption passing to Levi Little for 16 yards. And that would prove to be all the first-quarter scoring .

But Ipswich finally got on the second-quarter scoreboard with a eight-yard keeper by quarterback Max Kulesa. But a lost fumble deep in the Tigers' own territory would give the Titans a great opportunity to score and they did exactly that with a one-yard run by Wesley Thorpe. And Sumption would tack on the all important two-point conversion carry.

Kyle Hettich would then complete a Tiger drive with a third-quarter two-yard run. But again no conversion points! And the final quarter would evolve into a defensive standoff.

Leola/Frederick rolled up 311 rushing yards led by Gavin Nickelson with 141 of them and Sumption with 90 yards followed by Thorpe with 56 yards. Ipswich unofficially countered with 92 yards on the ground, led by Casey Geditz with 41 yards, Hettich with 38 and Kulesa with 13. And the Titans were 4-6-1 in passes from Sumption that covered 60 yards. Ipswich obtained 161 passing yards by Kulesa at 7-21-2. Trevor Heinz totaled four receptions for 62 yards and Hettich went 2-64 in receptions followed by Jaxan Holt at 1-35.

Ipswich had 11 tackles by Chet Peterson and Geditz and Hettich added nine tackles apiece. The Titans would come away with a team balanced tackling effort.

The Tigers will play at Britton-Hecla on September 29. They dropped to 3-3 after Saturday's defeat, while the Titans improved to 4-2.
