Ipswich attended a high school volleyball tourney hosted by Potter County in Gettysburg last Saturday.
Ipswich was able to come away with one win and three losses in their four matches. The win would be against McIntosh 25-21 and 25-23 - both close decisions.
But the Tigers were defeated 2-0 by Phillip 25-11 and 25-13 and Wolsey-Wessington 25-13 and 25-12. They also lost to Potter County 2-1 as they were able to win a set 25-19. But the hosts would regroup for a 25-20 win and a 25-16 victory.
“We forged through some tough matches versus some very good teams early in the day,” said Coach Trent Osborne. “Wolsey-Wessington and Philip each are very good teams that will probably be seen in the SoDak 16 later this season. Both of those teams were able to take advantage of our lack of offense on the day and pulled away in each game.”
Versus McIntosh they were 80 of 98 in hitting with 16 kills led by Marley Guthmiller at 17-20 with five kills and Kaylin Onken 16-18 with three kills. That happened because they were 107-109 in setting with 12 assists. Reaghan Bowers went 61-61 with eight assists and Josie Knutson was 29-29 with three assists.
In serving the Tigers were 30 of 33 with nine aces. Natalie Crissman finished 14-15 with four aces and Jaydin Stiles went 7-7 with two aces. They were able to come away with 35 digs paced by Gabby Wald at eight of them and Guthmiller added seven digs. Rylee Kleffman added one block.
“We played McIntosh for 7th and 8th place and showed a little bit better offense but continued to make far too many errors to pull away like we feel that we should have,” Osborne said.
The Tigers battled the Mobridge Tigers on Monday. IHS will host Hitchcock-Tulare on Thursday and will also host Leola/Frederick Area on Monday, Oct. 16. The Tigers will then play Aberdeen Christian on the road on Tuesday, Oct. 17.
