With the Miller boys' cross country varsity scoring a winning 32 team points at last Wednesday's regional in Chamberlain, it became a race for second. And the North Central Thunder would accomplish exactly that. They placed second with 50 team points topping McLaughlin's third with 57. So that will send the entire Thunder team to the State A later this month in Sioux Falls.
Miller was individually led by Pierce Baumberger's championship run in 16:44 followed by his teammate Alex Schumacher in second at 16:52. So you could correctly guess that the Rustlers would be in the drivers seat and they were!
Meanwhile the Thunder were led by Gabe Johnson in ninth at 18:12 and Anthony Miller was 14th in 18:46 followed by Avery Wells in 15th at 18:47. Drew Arbach was a close 16th at 18:47 as well. Aaron Ingerson placed 26th in 19:58 and Jason Arbach rounded out their effort with his 30th-place 20:04 clocking.
"We had a wonderful day!" said Coach Jenny Roth.
Eight boys teams were eligible for the varsity team standings and seven girls varsity teams. The winning girl would be Kinsey Evans of Chamberlain at 19:09 and Autumn Baker of Kimball/White Lake was second in 19:31. So Chamberlain also topped KWL in the girls' varsity team race 16 to 21.
The Top 20 individuals qualify for the state meet and that would include NC's Melanie Dallenbach in 17th at 22:05 and her teammate Grace Roth was 19th in 22:28. But Mikaela Malsom was 23rd at 23:21 so won't quite advance. But they would tie for fourth in their regional team standings with Todd County's 78 . Three more Thunder runners were entered - Kassandra Abbas in 29th at 24:47, Lily Roth in 33rd at 25:31 and Sophie Kroll 39th in 28:14.
The Cross Country State Championship will be held Oct. 21 in Yankton Trail Park in Sioux Falls. The Class A boys will run at 1 p.m. The Class A girls will run at 2:30 p.m. The awards will be given after the final race, the girls A.
