Both teams played with a lot emotion and fire, but Aberdeen Christian would eventually stave off Ipswich 3-0 in a league high school volleyball match last Tuesday in Aberdeen.
In a post-game interview with a South Dakota Sports Scene reporter Ipswich coach Trent Osborne said "It's always a learning situation. We got better tonight, which is good. Some girls really came out. I learned some stuff; the kids learned some stuff. What could be bad about that."
The hosts would indeed win the first set 25-20. And the second set was even closer at 25-22, while the third set ended up 25-17 all in favor of the Knights.
One of the Knights' keys had to be a 80-97 evening at the net that featured 27-kills. They were led by Ari Johnson at 21-24 with 11 kills. Ipswich countered with a 80-101 night there that would include 21 kills. Marley Guthmiller and Kaylin Onken each obtained nine kills for the Tigers.
The hosts also utilized a 66-74 effort at the service line that would include nine aces. Johnson also led that effort at 8-9 with a pair of aces. Ipswich would land seven aces among its 49 total accurate serves. Gracyn Kadlec was their leader with a perfect 13 serving effort that included six of the aces. And Nat Crissman went 10-11 at the line while including their other ace.
Ipswich was 94 of 102 in setting things up and included 22 assists. Josie Knutson led their effort with 63 sets which included 18 assists. (The hosts had 90 sets that featured 22 assists.)
Ipswich came away with 48 digs, led by Kathryn Kilber with 13 digs and Guthmiller added 10 digs. The Knight recorded 59 digs and three solo blocks. Ipswich had two solo blocks and four assisted.
The Tigers played Herreid/Selby Area Monday and completed the regular season Tuesday at Roscoe against North Central.
Regional play will begin Oct. 30 when the 8th and 9th seed team play. That winner and the remaining teams will play on Oct. 31 with Regional play complete on Nov. 2. The pairings will be finalized after the regular season is complete. The SoDak 16 games are on Nov. 7.
