Ipswich claimed a league 3-1 girls high school volleyball win last Monday in the Tiger Den over Leola/Frederick Area. But the match was somewhat closer than the final score would indicate.
The visitors would win their first set 25-23, but the hosts would rally for a 25-20 win of their own to tie things at 1-1. And they weren't through yet, winning the third set 25-19 and the fourth 25-21.
Their coach was impressed with their whole evening. "That was our first five match sweep in a few years," Osborne said. "It started with the 6th/seventh graders playing amazing and then the 8th graders, C team and JV team followed suit. It was an energy filled night and the crowd was great."
One highlight of many would be Marley Guthmiller's 19 kills among her 60 accurate hits. Kaylin Onken added a 29-33 night with nine kills. The entire team was 126-149 in attacking the net and featured 42 kills.
Meanwhile the visitors totaled 138 hits with 35 kills and were 63-67 in serving and included eight aces. Ipswich managed 78 serves including nine aces. They were led by Gracyn Kadlec at 6-7 with two aces and Kathryn Kilber added a 15-15 evening that included two aces as well.
Ipswich was able to distribute 107 sets including 42 assists. Josie Knutson led that effort with 84 sets and included 34 assists.
Defensively the Tigers were able to come away with 36 digs; L-F 100. The Tigers obtained 12 digs from Guthmiller and Charli Rawden added eight of them.
Ipswich added one solo block and three assisted. Natalie Crissman had the solo and two of the assisted while Rylee Kleffman was able to come up with two assisted blocks.
Osborne added that his team would play with outstanding energy and confidence all evening. "Even during our game #1 varsity loss we had great attitudes and looked like we were ready to play for the rest of the match," he said. "We had some great individual performances but ultimately it was us banding together as a team to pick up things for each other when we needed it that got things done."
