Ipswich opened its 2023-24 girls varsity basketball campaign with a homecourt non-coference 65-30 loss to Sully Buttes last Tuesday, December 5.
Ipswich opened scoring with an and-one three-point play by Gabby Wald. But the Chargers would end up with a 14-5 first-quarter lead and then led 35-18 at intermission. Then trailing 37-18 early in the third quarter, Ipswich would get a baseline two-point basket by Kaylin Onken. But the Chargers totaled 21 third-quarter points for a 56-21 advantage with a quarter to play and coasted to an impressive victory.
The visitors were led by Stevie Wittler's 32 points and Payge Bakker was next with 18 counters.
Ipswich countered with 13 points from Wald that included one trey. Anna Nierman finished with seven points and Brianna Geditz and Marley Guthmiller each scored four points. That basket from Onken would complete their scoring.
Ipswich had a balanced 31 rebounding evening led by Onken with six boards. (The visitors featured 31 rebounds as well!)
But the Chargers only had 12 turnovers, while Ipswich would sustain 21 miscues. Ipswich had 13 total field goals that included that trey. The visitors ended up with 24 total field goals all from within the trey arc. They made 17 free throws and Ipswich, three. (The Tigers attempted 12 free throws that evening.)
