An Edmunds Central cast will perform in the Region 7B One-Act Play Competition on Wednesday, Jan. 17 in the Ipswich School Theatre. Edmunds Central performs at 1 p.m.
The genre of the play is Director's Choice. Director Sandra Beyers said, "Our play this year is based on the book Ten Days in a Madhouse by Nellie Bly. The play title is NELLIE, and tells the story of Nellie Bly, investigative journalist in 1887 who checked herself into Blackwell's Island Asylum for ten days."
Bly reported on the inhumane conditions and treatments of the patients, forever changing the standards hospitals like this were held to and the lives of the patients being treated.
Story of the play, written by Robby Steltz, taken from the script description: In the late 1800's rumors were circulating about alleged horrors taking place on Blackwell's Island, home of the Insane Asylum of New York. Women were apparently the victims of abuse and torture, and one woman, a newspaper reporter, decided to risk her life to investigate. Nellie Bly committed herself to the asylum, documenting her findings and ultimately revealing the horrors to the entire world.
This one-act play, adapted from her book, "Ten Days in a Madhouse," tells the incredible story of how this girl reporter forever changed the way the world looks at the treatment and housing of the insane.
