Tiger boys get win with last second shot

The Ipswich Tiger varsity boys' basketball team made a long trip to Onida and left with a 68-65 non-conference win over the Chargers last Tuesday, Jan. 9. It was quite a close game, leading up to a 65-65 tie. But Ipswich's Chet Peterson would settle things for good with his closing-seconds trey.

The first quarter was deadlocked at 19-19 and Ipswich would then conclude the first half with a 30-26 lead. But Sully Buttes narrowed Ipswich's lead to 47-46 with a quarter to play and you all know how close that stanza turned out to be.

Peterson would end up with 18 points that included his huge trey. But he wouldn't become Ipswich's top scorer that night. Those honors went to Jace Konsor with 24 points that featured three treys. And Trevor Heinz would also climb the double-figure scoring plateau with his 15 points that would include a pair of three-balls.

Further scoring tapered off to Kyle Hettich with seven points including one trey and Xavier Kadlec with four points.

The hosts and everybody in the game were paced by Wesley Wittler who poured in a game high 32 points with four treys. Gavin Colson was next with 14 points and four more Chargers would score during the game.

Ipswich totaled 24 baskets that included their treys and went 11-13 in free throws. Meanwhile the Chargers made 23 baskets featuring their seven treys and were 12-14 in free throws.

Ipswich grabbed 41 rebounds led by Peterson's 20 retrieves for a definite double-double. Heinz had three of Ipswich's 11 assists and Xavier Kadlec three of Ipswich's six steals.

The Tiger boys and girls were scheduled to play a doubleheader versus North Central on Tuesday, Jan. 16 in Roscoe. The boys will travel to Faulkton on Friday, Jan. 19. They will play in the 42nd Annual Hanson Boys Corn Palace Classic in Mitchell on Saturday, Jan. 20. Ipswich is scheduled to play Gregory at 11:30 a.m.
