North Central's varsity boys claimed a 45-13 Lake Region Conference basketball win last Saturday in Langford. But the Thunder girls would sustain a 48-31 loss to their hosts.
Versus Langford, the NC boys would lead 10-4, 20-9 and 28-12 at each of their respecting quarter-breaks.
The Thunder were able to feature a balanced scoring attack, led by Raynor Sprague and Dawson Walz with nine points apiece. Tim Rucker was next with eight points, followed by Cole Beitelspacher with six points including a trey. Next would be Cooper Oxner with his five points including a trey.
Brady Beitelspacher tallied four points and Kobe Wherry and Zane Haar each scored two points. That added up to 17 total field goals that included the trio of treys and a 9-18 free throw effort.
The hosts were held to five baskets that included one trey. They were 2-4 in free throws. Jacob Samson and Rennan Bruns would score five points each, followed by Ethen Olson with two points and Carson Okroi with a free throw.
The Lions were hindered by 14 turnovers.
But in the girls' game the Lions owned a 10-8 first-quarter lead and stretched that to 22-9 at halftime. They would then grab a 39-20 third-quarter edge.
The Langford contingent was led by Megan Gustafson with 23 points. Paytyn Marlow and Alex Darling each scored nine points. Eliana Darling had three points and Autumn Wegleitner and Tawnee Nelson each added two points.
But highlights for the Thunder girls would have to be Amree Vander Vorst with 10 points that included two treys and Alaina Dosch with nine points on three treys.
Next would be Ella Batie with seven points and Lindsey Geier and Camryn Witlock scored two points each followed by Katelyn Engelhart with a free throw.
The Lions were able to net 18 floor shots including four treys and were 8-11 in free throw tries. The Thunder countered with 12 baskets that featured their treys but were only 2-12 at the charity stripes.
The Thunder have three doublheaders coming up. They play Potter County in Hoven on Thursday, Jan. 25. Then they will host Strasburg/Zeeland, N.D. in Eureka on Friday. The Thunder will host Aberdeen Christian in Bowdle on Jan. 30.
