The state's Class B boys basketball tournament certainly lived up to its pre-tourney hype and then some. The tournament concluded with a narrow championship win in overtime by Howard thus preventing DeSmet from obtaining its fourth straight title. They had to settle for second this time around.
Under that new SoDak 16 format anybody could win this tournament if they would play the entire event again this week. And we had wondered how our Lake Region Conference member Leola-Frederick Area would do there and the answer was apparently not so great. The Titans would eventually fail to obtain a single win in their three close contests.
The "A" tourney ended with Northeast Conference rep Hamlin emerging with the championship over Sioux Falls Christian in overtime, while Groton Area was seventh in that event also from that league. Another close championship was in Class AA where Mitchell edged Brandon Valley by one point. The Mitchell Kernels are once again alive and well!
Now we’ll be looking for some Tournament-type weather a week late. Hope you didn’t store your shovels already.
