Funeral Service for Opal Himmerich, 84, of Sioux Falls (formerly of Roscoe) is 10 a.m., Saturday, May 4, 2024, at St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Roscoe.
Visitation is 5 to 7 p.m., Friday, May 3, 2024, at Schriver Funeral Home, 720 N. 6th Street, Ipswich. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service at the church on Saturday.
Opal was born April 15, 1940, to Russell and Mary (McLaughlin) Tory at the Britton Hospital in Britton. She attended country school through seventh grade in Nordland Township #2 and graduated from Britton High School in 1958. She continued her education and graduated from the Aberdeen School of Commerce in 1959.
Opal was employed as the secretary for the City of Aberdeen Street Commissioner until December, 1965. She then worked as the City Finance Officer for the City of Roscoe for 32 years.
Opal married Harry Himmerich on September 6, 1964, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Aberdeen and together they had two children: Shane born December 10, 1965, and Annette born October 17,1972.
Opal was a member of numerous Roscoe organizations. She belonged to St. Paul's Lutheran Church Ladies Aide where she held many offices; Roscoe Commercial Club where she held the office of secretary and was a member of the book committee which published the Roscoe history books for the Centennial and Quasi Centennial; and a member of the senior citizens group where she served as Treasurer.
Opal loved watching her children and grandchildren grow up and she participated in the many school activities they were a part of. She also enjoyed traveling with her husband.
Opal passed away peacefully at Ava's House under the care of Sanford Hospice in Sioux Falls on Sunday, April 28, 2024.
She is remembered by her children, Shane (Lela) Himmerich of Sioux Falls and Annette (Greg) Sonnen of Rockwall, Tex.; grandchildren, Gretta and Trevor Sonnen and Paige Himmerich; brother, Arvin (Bonita) Tory of Britton; sister-in-law, Georgia (Leo) Himmerich of Watertown; sister-in-law, Diana (Barry) Erickson of Salem; brother-in-law, Melvin Himmerich of Andover, Minn.; and numerous nieces and nephews including Kim (Brian) Peters, Tina (Todd) Warkenthien, Teresa (Chris) Hamiel, Kelly (Don) Wieser, and Kerri (Aaron) Purkeypile.
Opal is preceded in death by all four grandparents, her parents, her brother Russell Jr., and her husband Harry (September 6, 2010), her mother and father-in-law John Jr. and Clara Himmerich, her brothers-in-law Harold Sahli and Leo Himmerich and sisters-in-law Dolores Sahli and Renetta Himmerich, as well as several aunts and uncles.
