Memorial Day to be recognized Monday in area

Americans will celebrate Memorial Day on Monday, May 27. Local organizations will celebrate the holiday with programs.

HOSMER

The Hosmer Legion will host a program at 10:30 a.m. in St. John's Lutheran Church in Hosmer.

The Prairie Harmony Singers will provide musical entertainment. Kathy Schaffer will give the Memorial Day Address.

Schaffer was born in Eureka and graduated frem Eureka High School in 1967. She enlisted in the Army in 1968, hoping to join the Air Force, but did not meet the weight qualifications. Stationed in Ft. McClellan, Ala. for her time in the service. She was a platoon sergeant for those women being discharged for any number of reasons.

After leaving the service, Schaffer worked in the medical field as a coder. She worked in the trauma hospital near her home in Pittsburgh, Penn.

She returned to Eureka in 2012 after getting married to Stan. She is retired and enjoys quilting and working in the yard.

IPSWICH

The Memorial Day service will be held at the Circle of Flags in the Ipswich Cemetery at 5 p.m. on May 27. In the case of inclement weather the program will be held in the Ipswich School.

ROSCOE

The Roscoe Memorial Day program will begin at 6 p.m. in the Roscoe Legion Post Home. The program will be followed by the presentation of flags, roll call and taps at Morningside Cemetery.

A potluck supper will be held after the program. Sandwiches will be provided.

Chris Reder of the DTOM Veterans Ranch at Warner, will be the speaker. He is passionate about and dedicated to helping veterans and their families heal.

The mission of the DTOM 22/0 Foundation and Veterans Ranch is to provide a safe place for healing and recovery for military service members, veterans and their families while encouraging, engaging and positively impacting their lives through hope, self-conviction and family activities, while helping them learn to live again with purpose.

Reder, a Navy Veteran, has won a variety of awards including the National American Made Heroes Award and Chet Sorenson South Dakota Veteran of the Year.
