To the Editor:

If you’ve not noticed, our county commissioners have decided to raise our taxes for roads and bridges. The tax would be $.50 per thousand. Now while some of you may think that is a good thing, the brunt of the tax levy will again be brought on us, the property owners!

I emailed the commissioners on July 26 and asked them three simple questions. 1) Is this a one time only tax 2) How was the tax increase calculated 3) Why are the property owners carrying the load for this tax. Apparently, our commissioners either don’t read emails or are not concerned about the voter’s questions or opinions as I’ve yet to receive a reply as of August 8.

The commissioners have also left the burden on the voters to generate petitions to get this tax levy on the ballot for us to vote on. I personally think that any tax hike (we all know taxes never go down) should be automatically attached to a ballot for the citizens vote.

For those of you that think this is a good thing, I then ask. Why is it the state can generously bail out universities and colleges to the tune of $357 million of our tax dollars but can’t give any to the counties for the roads and bridges? When have we been taxed enough?
