Author will work with Edmunds Central students

Author Dan Gemeinhart will work with Edmunds Central students on Wednesday, Sept. 11 in the school in Roscoe.

He is the author of eight books for young readers: Once Upon a Friend (his first picture book), Coyote Lost and Found, the Midnight Children, the Remarkable Journey of Coyote Sunrise, the Honest Truth, Some Kind of Courage, Scar Island, and Good Dog.

Gemeinhart will spend the day working with all students, K-12. The students will enjoy small group Q&As and small group creative writing workshops. A large group presentation will include a message about being yourself and lessons about failing and continuing on.

There will be an evening session available to parents and community members. More information will be available about that next week.

EC librarian Sandra Beyers said "I have been reading his books in the library with my fifth graders for five years and contacted him in the spring to see if he would be available to visit. My favorite two books of his are Scar Island and The Remarkable Journey of Coyote Sunrise."  Most of his books are written for middle grade readers, generally third-eighth grade, but this summer  he just released his first picture book for young readers.

Gemeinhart was born in Frankfurt, Germany in 1978. His dad was in the Army. "My family moved A LOT when I was growing up, so I went to a different school almost every year until I was in middle school," he said. He lives in Washington state with his wife, an high school English teacher, and three young daughters.

His website says he was "lucky and grateful to be a teacher-librarian in an elementary school for thirteen years, where he got to share awesome books with awesome kids." He loves camping, cooking and traveling. He also plays guitar (badly) and reads (constantly). His house is always a mess. Dan says he is "really pretty darn happy."

The visit is being sponsored by the First State Bank of Roscoe.

Gemeinhart will speak in Eureka on Sept. 12 and in Bowdle on Sept. 13.
