Leonard E. Schmidt

Leonard E. Schmidt, 90, Roscoe, died Monday, August 19, 2024 at Sanford Aberdeen Medical Center.

Mass of Christian Burial was at 11 a.m., Tuesday, August 27, 2024 at St. Thomas Catholic Church, Roscoe, with Father Timothy Cone, Celebrant.

Leonard Edmund Schmidt, son of Louise (Timp) and John J. Schmidt, was born north of Gettysburg, Potter County, on December 7, 1933. At age four, he moved with his family to a farm near Hoven. Except for two years of country school, Leonard was educated at St. Anthony's Parochial School in Hoven. Following his schooling, he stayed on the family farm five miles east of Hoven.

He served his country in the United States Army, being inducted in 1954. Following his honorable discharge in 1956, he returned to the farm. He married Donna M. Thies at St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Selby on October 7, 1958. They settled on a farm near Tolstoy. In 1967, they purchased the Walter Barth farm 10 miles southwest of Roscoe. In 1990, Leornard semi-retired from farming and he and Donna moved to Roscoe.

He was a member of St. Thomas Catholic Church in Roscoe and the Andrew and Harold Schauer American Legion Post No. 259, Roscoe. Leonard considered being with his grandchildren as time well spent.

He is survived by Donna, his wife of 65 years; four sons, Alan Schmidt of Redfield, Loren Schmidt and Joseph (Wendy) Schmidt of Roscoe, and Duane Schmidt of Bismarck, N.D .; two daughters, Kathy Crackel of Rapid City and Carol Geditz of Selby; three brothers, Norbert (Gloria) Schmidt of Spearfish, Vern (Carolyn) Schmidt of Hoven, and Ken (Evie) Schmidt of Aberdeen; one sister, Bonnie Taylor of Sioux Falls; 12 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter.

Leonard was preceded by his father, John, on February 23, 1984; his mother, Louise, on November 5, 1990; three sisters, Bernice Schmidt on August 19, 2001, Virginia Hawkinson on February 4, 2024, and Marlyn (in infancy); one brother, Marvin, on July 1, 2020; son-in-law, Bill Crackel; brothers-in-law, Larry Hawkinson and Wayne Taylor; and sister-in-law, Judy Schmidt.

Musicians were Jackie Opp and Bernita Flannery. Lector was Melissa Sauer and Mass servers were Caleb Scherr and Seth Hettick. Military rites were by the Roscoe Legion Post.

Honorary bearers were Leonard's siblings.

Casketbearers were Brad Geditz of Selby, Keith Geditz of Rapid City, Eric Crackel of Severance, Colo., Chandler Pullman and Austin Shult of Roscoe, and Gary Gibson of Palantine, Ill..
