Marriages in S.D. Decrease

Divorces Show 3.7 Percent Increases in the State Over 1928 and also in the United States.

According to figures from the United States department of commerce, marriages in South Dakota decreased .5 percent last year in comparison with 1928, while divorces increased 3.7 percent for the same period.

During 1929, 6701 marriages were performed in the state, 37 less than the 6738 performed in 1928.

These figures give the state a percentage of 9.8 marriages per 1000 of population in 1929 and 9.9 per 1000 of population in 1928.

Divorces in 1929 totaled 778, an increase of 28 over 1928 when 750 divorces were granted. In 1929 the divorces per 1000 of population were 1.13 as compared to 1.10 per 1000 population in 1928.

For every divorce granted in South Dakota last year there were 8.6 marriages. Four marriages performed in 1929 were annulled. In 1928 the number annulled was five.

For the entire United States, 1,232,599 marriages were performed in 1929, an increase of 50,062 marriages or 4.2 percent over 1928. During the same year 201,475 divorces were granted, an increase of 5536 or 2.8 percent over 1928. There were 4400 marriages annulled in 1929, as compared with 4237 in 1928.

The number of marriages per 1000 of population for the entire country during 1929 was 10.1 as against 9.9 in 1928. The number of divorces last year per 1000 population was 1.66 as compared with 1.64 in 1928.

In 1929 for the United States as a whole 6.1 marriages for each divorce were reported as against 6.0 in 1928. The District of Columbia and New York each having but one cause for absolute divorce reported 49.0 and 23.6 marriages respectively, for each divorce. Rates in other states ranged from 13.3 marriages to each divorce in Georgia to 2.3 marriages to each divorce in Nevada.

The rate of marriages per 1000 of population ranged from 5.2 in Delaware and 6.0 in North Carolina to 17.3 in Arizona and 63.7 in Nevada. The ratio of divorces per 1000 of population in the individual states in 1929 ranged from .24 in the District of Columbia and .41 in New York to 3.49 in Oklahoma and 28.14 in Nevada.
